If you only look at the results, you might be impressed:
two offers from University College London, along with offers from the University of Manchester, King's College London, the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, and other leading institutions, including the UK G5 and Australia's Group of Eight.
At first glance, many might assume that Jason Lan is a typical "top student."
But that is not the case. Jason once received a grade C in Mathematics, and his Biology results stagnated. During the application season, he also experienced moments of anxiety late at night, wondering whether he would receive any offers at all. So how did a "non-top student" gradually progress toward his dream at Fettes College Guangzhou?
During university guidance lessons at Fettes College Guangzhou, Jason first gained a deeper understanding of fields such as biomedical science and cancer biology.

“Life sciences require a great deal of talent. For example, cancer research receives a significant proportion of global research funding. Infectious diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and ageing all fall within this field. Life sciences as a whole are dedicated to addressing major challenges facing humanity,” his university counsellor explained.

“Before, I didn’t have a clear goal of studying cancer biology. After discussions with my counsellor, my direction became much clearer.” Jason also has family members with immune-related conditions. He shared, “Cancer rates are quite high now, and many families have experienced it in some way. I hope that in the future, I can help more families affected by cancer and ease their burden.”

This simple yet sincere motivation led him to choose the path of medicine.
For Jason, studying medicine is a challenging journey. It requires not only strong academic performance, but also exposure to advanced laboratory environments and real research experience.
With the recommendation of the university guidance team, Jason attended a cancer research laboratory in Suzhou during the summer of 2025.
“For example, in biotechnology, I learned gene techniques such as PCR and how to apply fluorescence to cells for observation,” Jason explained. He conducted experiments, including gel electrophoresis, and observed the effectiveness of tumour drugs in mice.

Later, he included this experience in his personal statement, raising his own questions and reflections:
“I read about research using stem cells to create artificial pancreases. This made me wonder whether stem cells could also be used to reconstruct the thymus, to treat conditions such as myasthenia gravis or other immune-related diseases.”
At the beginning of his AS studies, Jason received a grade C in Mathematics. Without achieving an A, pursuing medicine at a top university would be extremely difficult. While waiting for application results and preparing to retake the exam, he experienced a period of uncertainty.
“During the AS summer, it’s important to confirm your direction early, complete your personal statement, and leave as much time as possible to prepare for subject tests or university entrance exams,” Jason advised.
During this time, his Mathematics teacher, Ms. Angela, helped ease his anxiety by creating a structured and disciplined study plan:
· Weekly quizzes and regular assessments
· Intensive practice on weaker and unfamiliar question types
· Breaking down problems step by step from fundamental concepts

“Once you repeat something 10 or even 100 times, it becomes very hard to forget.” Jason said. Whenever he asked questions, Ms. Angela went beyond simply giving hints. Using her iPad, she worked through each solution step by step, ensuring complete understanding.
Six months later, Jason improved his Mathematics grade from a C to an A—“and a very high A,” he added with a smile.
Jason also faced challenges in Biology. While his Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Chemistry were all graded A, Biology remained at a B.
“When doing questions, I felt like I understood everything, however when writing answers, I kept missing key points.” Under time pressure and the need to retake exams, Jason felt significant stress. “I was worried about not performing well or not receiving offers. It feels like you are close to finding your direction, but stuck—and you still have to keep moving forward.”

His Biology teacher, Ms. Jennifer, believed that simply doing more questions would not solve the problem. Instead, she systematically broke down each type of exam question.
“We analysed the key words in mark schemes and studied the logic and structure of official answers.”
Every mistake was carefully reviewed. Ms. Jennifer continually asked: Why is this point necessary? Why is the answer structured this way?
She emphasised, “Your foundational knowledge must be absolutely solid. Only when you are **** sure can you say you truly understand.”
Through repeated analysis and reflection, Jason developed his own structured approach to answering questions. Even when faced with unfamiliar questions, he could quickly identify the underlying concepts and construct complete answers.

Looking back, Jason summarised four key lessons:
First, focusing in class is the most efficient way to learn. Stay attentive during lessons, review notes afterwards, identify gaps, check textbooks, and seek help from teachers when needed.
Second, develop a problem-solving mindset. Identify the knowledge point being tested, then analyse how answers are logically structured and expressed.
Third, avoid procrastination. Jason made daily to-do lists and completed tasks one by one.
Jason Lan
